Starting a New Fitness Habit: Embrace Simplicity for Lasting Change

Updated: Feb 9, 2024

Embarking on a fitness journey can feel scary, especially when bombarded with images of six packs, crazy exercises, and overwhelming advice on social media. However, I am here to assure you that starting a new fitness habit can be extremely easy. Using the principles outlined in James Clear's book, "Atomic Habits," you can pave the way for long-lasting change. In this blog, my goal is to offer guidance to those struggling to dive into fitness, while debunking the idea that exercise and health need to be complicated.

Tip # 1 - Start small and build momentum

A key concept of atomic habits is the notion of starting small. Rather than diving headfirst into intense workout routines, begin with small, achievable goals. For example, commit to a 10-minute walk every day or a simple bodyweight exercise routine. By starting small, you create a positive feedback loop that gradually builds momentum, making it easier to incorporate more significant changes over time.

Tip # 2 - Embrace the power of habit stacking

Habit stacking is a powerful technique for effortlessly integrating new habits into your daily routine. Identify an existing habit, such as making your morning coffee, and pair it with your new fitness habit. For instance, perform a quick 5 minute body weight routine while waiting for your coffee to brew. By attaching your fitness habit to an established routine, you eliminate the need for excessive willpower and make exercise a natural part of your day.

Tip # 3 - Make it obvious and convenient

Creating a visible reminder is key to ensuring consistency. Lay out your workout clothes the night before or place your yoga mat in a prominent spot in your home. By making your fitness habit obvious and removing barriers, you reduce the friction of getting started. Remember, simplicity is key.

Tip # 4 - Celebrate progress, not perfection

Too often, social media bombardes us with images of perfection, leading to discouragement and self-doubt. It's essential to remember that fitness is a personal journey, and progress comes in various forms. Celebrate the small wins, like completing a full week of workouts or increasing your flexibility. By focusing on progress rather than perfection, you'll maintain a positive mindset and stay motivated for the long haul.

Tip # 5 - Find joy in the process

Exercise should never feel like a punishment. Explore different activities until you discover what brings you joy. Whether it's dancing, swimming, hiking, or practicing yoga, choose an activity that resonates with you. When you genuinely enjoy the process, exercise becomes a source of pleasure rather than a chore, making it easier to develop a lasting fitness habit.

Starting a new fitness habit doesn't have to be complicated. By adopting the principles of atomic habits, we can make small changes that lead to significant transformations over time. Remember to start small, leverage habit stacking, make it obvious and convenient, celebrate progress, and find joy in the process. Disregard the overwhelming complexity promoted on social media and focus on creating a sustainable routine that aligns with your individual needs and goals. Once you've established a routine it becomes that much easier to build upon it.

You've got this! Embrace simplicity, and you'll be amazed at the positive impact it has on your fitness journey.
